A Dream Project: Canoe and Comte Bureau to Help Shape Stavanger's New Theatre and Museum

Trond Dagsland

Canoe and Comte Bureau have been brought in to work on one of the most significant urban development projects in Stavanger: the new theatre and museum building on Eckhoff Hill. A site that will bring Rogaland Theatre and Museum Stavanger together under one roof, and redefine what those institutions offer to the city and everyone who visits it.

The work ahead

Our role is to help explore what this new building should actually do. Not just what it looks like, but what it contains. What concepts, services, and experiences will it offer residents, visitors, schoolchildren, artists, and communities? What does the city need from this place, and how do we design for that from the very start?

We kicked off with a workshop at our studio in Breigata, bringing together project owners and the project group from Stavanger Municipality, Rogaland Theatre, and Museum Stavanger. Good conversations, open questions, and a shared appetite for doing this properly.

Why this matters

Buildings like this shape cities for decades. The choices made now about what this space is for, and who it's for, will ripple forward in ways that outlast all of us.

That's not a reason to be precious about it. It's a reason to be rigorous, creative, and genuinely curious about what the people of Stavanger actually need.

We're proud to be part of this. Excited for what comes next.
